Amethyst is a violet variety of the quartz crystal.  It is used mainly in jewelry today but how did the mystique of amethyst begin and just who wore it and why?

The name Amethyst comes from the Ancient Greeks and translates to mean, not intoxicated.  A reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness… So clearly most of us should really start wearing amethyst on the weekends and put it on immediately after a rough day at the office.

Amethyst has been a prized gem for many ancient civilizations. They called it ,the gem of fire.  Bishops of the Catholic Church wear an amethyst ring because the royal purple color is used to symbolize Christ.
Moses described it as a symbol of the Spirit of God.  Hebrews used it as the twelfth foundation stone for Jerusalem.

The Russian Empress Catherine the Great was so enamored with the stone she sent thousands of miners to the Urals to look for it. In the popular belief that the stone protects against drunkenness.

Amethyst was also reported to control evil thoughts, increase intelligence and make a person shrewd in business. A large number of miraculous powers are attributed to the amethyst gemstone in many varied cultures. It brings good fortune in war, drives out evil spirits, protects the crops from locusts and can even protect someone from a snakebite but of course only if worn around the neck with a cord made of dog hair.

Amethyst is one of the most popular stones today for many other reasons. Firstly it is a beautiful crystal quartz with shades that can vary from a soft lilac to a rich royal purple. At New Age Charm we have a number of amethyst designs in our collection. One of our favorites is the Samadhi bracelet…made of lilac amethyst and a tiny silver lotus charm – the wearer feels peace and inner strength, it is also said to enable a meditative state and bring you to a deeper place of spirituality.

Amethyst has been revered for thousands of years and continues to be vastly popular today both because of its deep royal beauty, mysticism and of course the protection from the evilness of drunkenness!
